It is a stated long term strategy of the Chinese Communist Party to rejoin Taiwan to China. This is for historic reasons that are irrelevant today and disregards the wishes of the Taiwanese who have got use to their independence. However, the Chinese see this as unfinished business and there is talk of use of military force and invasions, especially as Trump would probably do nothing if a war started.
However, as the war in Ukraine has reminded the world, war only brings misery destruction and death, not to mention the enormous cost that has ultimately failed to achieve its objectives. Also what is the point of gaining the island, if it's buildings and infrastructure have been reduced to rubble?
So China, if it wants to "take" Taiwan, should do what it does best- Be smart and play the long game. This would be to charm the Taiwanese to see the economic benefits of a Union with China and woo the Taiwanese to vote for better links, friendship and wealth etc with the worlds new superpower.
China should look at the European model, which has a number of countries wanting to join as they know they will be better off in the European Union than out.
No war,. No enemies. No victims. Win Win all round.
